Computing curriculum intent

We believe it is important for children growing up in today's digital world to know and understand how to use technology appropriately and safely. Our curriculum provides children with opportunities to explore and understand the world of technology, whilst also developing an appreciation of how to navigate the internet safely and respectfully.

Hamworthy Primary Schools ensure that the Computing curriculum:

  • Challenges and inspires our children to achieve through creative learning opportunities.
  • Promotes deep thinking within their learning so that all children are able to become competent and computational thinkers.
  • Allows all pupils to become digitally literate; enabling them to express themselves and develop their ideas through information and communication.
  • Ensures children know and understand how to keep themselves and others safe when using the internet and social media / communication games, devices and websites.

Our computing curriculum offer promotes digital literacy, developing skills for a world we do not yet know by dividing the curriculum  into three strands that will give children the opportunities to develop and apply their learning as they progress from Early Years to KS2

  • Information technology
  • Computer Science or Coding
  • Using computers including and safe and responsible use of the internet

Coding

Coding is taught in Years 1 to 6 through Discovery Education Coding.
With Discovery Education Coding, pupils will gain a thorough understanding of coding concepts like algorithms, sequences and variables - as well as developing computational thinking skills through decomposition, logical reasoning and problem-solving.

The contexts used throughout are interesting and motivating for pupils with a tangible output at the end of each lesson. Whether pupils want to make a space rocket fly, Red Riding Hood walk through the forest or feed a hungry monster there is something to inspire every pupil.

Internet Safety

At Hamworthy Primary Schools, we have security measures in place and filtering that helps safeguard pupils from potential dangers and unsuitable materials. Any online safety incidents are recorded and managed in accordance with our E-Safety policy.

We believe that it is hugely important for children growing up in today's digital world to know and understand how to use the internet safely. We have therefore taken positive steps in our learning to ensure that risks are minimalized by educating and empowering our children to use the Internet with care.  Our staff receive regular training and updates regarding new Internet Safety information.

ProjectEvolve

ProjectEVOLVE is a resource we use within our schools to teach elements of Online Safety.

ProjectEVOLVE covered each of the 330 statements from UK Council for Internet Safety's (UKCIS) framework “Education for a Connected World” with perspectives; research; activities; outcomes; supporting resources and professional development materials.
